How to store drinking water at festivals

After a year of silence in the fields and parks, we are set to see the return of festivals. As thousands of people look forward to seeing their favourite acts, it is crucial to stay hydrated.

Festival organisers have a lawful obligation to ensure they provide drinking water to festivalgoers.

The British Standards set some guidelines for festival organisers to follow. They state that drinking should be provided from a mains supply where possible. If not, an alternative quality water supply should be used. British Standard also require that all water dispensing equipment should be cleaned and cared for. As well, an acceptable amount of drinking water points being made available.

To ensure you do not fall foul to any of these guidelines, here are some things to consider when storing water at a festival:

Stable Ground

First, you need to ensure that the ground you are using can withstand the weight of the container or tank you are using. The weight will vary depending on the size you get, but a standard size is 1000 litres. Take into consideration both the weight, and the footprint of your storage method and be sure to check that the ground will not give way under such a load.

Sourcing the Water

Once you have established that you’ve got some solid ground for your water storage, you need to think about where you are getting your water from. As it is to be used by thousands of people, ensure that it is from an authorised provider. They say no publicity is bad publicity, but a news story about people at your festival falling ill due to questionable water will never go down well.

Maintaining the Tank Quality

This leads onto our next point nicely, maintenance of the storage tank. If the storage tank you use is not maintained correctly, the water might become contaminated. Below you will find steps to look after your water tanks:

  1. Before using, ensure your water storage is in mint condition
  2. Clean the outside only (you need a professional to clean the inside). Only use soapy water to wipe down the exterior
  3. Frequently flush or empty water tanks that are used to store water over long periods
  4. Test the water every 24 hours

Protection from the Sun

Sunshine is what all festival goers and organisers pray for on the days of the festival. The sun arguable makes the whole event even better. If the sun is shining and the temperatures are high, be sure to check the temperature of the water throughout the day. If possible, you want to try and keep the water tank stored in an environment that is less than 20 degrees. Checking the water tanks regularly, especially on hot days, will ensure a nice water temperature.
