Description

Temporary Access and Ground Protection Mats are now an essential requirement for the construction, civil engineering and groundwork industries, although they’re also used extensively within the festival and outdoor event sectors.

Our DuraMatt - Light/Medium Duty Access Mat is manufactured from 100% recycled Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) and weighs just 34kg. DuraMatt is ideal for both short and long-term projects and can be used in a variety of applications.

DuraMatt is capable of taking weights of 15-20 tonnes* depending on the ground conditions, they’ve also been designed with a connection hole in each corner should the mats need to be connected together.

DuraMatt has a unique diamond pattern “non-slip” surface on one side, the other side has been left smooth for working on hard-standing areas and sensitive grass, it also allows contractors to use the mat as a spoil board for construction materials. Its flexible nature allows the mats to follow the contours of the ground to deliver highly effective access over undulating or sloping terrain.

The standard colour option is Grey – Please contact us for other colours or customisation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do ground protection mats harm grass?

Ground protection mats are designed to protect underlying grass from heavy vehicle tyres, foot traffic, and machinery by evenly distributing weight to prevent soil compaction and rutting.

While short-term use protects lawns and maintains ground integrity, leaving solid mats over grass for extended periods can restrict sunlight, air, and moisture. For long-term or temporary applications, move the mats periodically to allow the grass to recover, breathe, and receive the daylight it needs.

How to secure ground protection mats?

To ensure maximum safety and stability, ground protection mats should be properly joined and anchored based on the ground conditions and type of traffic:

  • Connection Options: Use metal or plastic joiners (such as two-way or four-way connectors) to link adjacent mats together. This creates a continuous, rigid walkway or roadway and prevents individual panels from shifting or separating under heavy wheel loads.

  • Ground Anchoring: On soft, muddy, or sloping terrain, drive ground stakes or steel pins through the pre-drilled connection holes at the corners of the mats to anchor the surface securely.

  • Surface Preparation: Clear debris, rocks, and uneven obstacles from the area before laying the mats to ensure flat contact with the ground, reduce movement, and prevent tripping hazards.

How much weight will a floor protection mat take?

The weight capacity of a floor protection mat depends on the thickness, material composition, and underlying surface conditions. Heavy-duty ground and floor protection mats, such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE) access mats, are engineered to support substantial loads, accommodating vehicles and equipment ranging from standard light commercial vehicles up to heavy plant machinery. DuraMatt can support 15 – 20 tonnes* depending on ground conditions.

Key factors influencing load-bearing performance include:

  • Ground Sub-Base: Firm, flat, and level ground allows mats to distribute weight evenly across their full surface area, maximising load capability. Soft, muddy, or uneven ground conditions reduce overall load tolerance and may require thicker panels or overlapping layers.

  • Material and Thickness: Standard 12mm thick heavy-duty polymer mats are typically rated for medium-to-heavy traffic, including trucks and small excavators, whereas thicker composite or timber mats are designed for extreme loads and tracked vehicles.

  • Vehicle Type and Tyres: Pneumatic rubber tyres distribute weight more evenly than steel tracks or narrow machinery feet, which create concentrated loads. Always consult the manufacturer's specifications for static vs dynamic load limits before placing heavy plant equipment on floor protection mats.

How to protect rubber floor mats.

To ensure long-term durability, safety, and optimal performance, proper care and maintenance of rubber floor mats are essential. Following these key steps will help extend their lifespan and maintain structural integrity:

  • Regular Cleaning: Routine maintenance prevents dirt, grit, and debris from accumulating and embedding into the rubber surface. Wash ground mats using mild soap or dedicated cleaning solutions mixed with warm water. Avoid harsh solvents, strong acids, or abrasive scrubbers, which can degrade or discolour the rubber.

  • Chemical and Oil Exposure Management: While specialised rubber mats are engineered to withstand oils, greases, and industrial chemicals, prolonged or unmanaged contact with aggressive substances can cause swelling, softening, or cracking over time. Wipe down or rinse off spills to maintain the surface of your ground protection mats.

  • Proper Storage & Handling: When not in use, store rubber ground mats flat or loosely rolled in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, UV exposure, and extreme temperature fluctuations. Storing mats flat prevents permanent creasing, curling, or warping, ensuring they lay flat and trip-free when re-deployed.

  • Weight Distribution and Load Awareness: Avoid placing sharp, concentrated point loads or extreme forces that surpass the manufacturer's recommended limits to prevent tearing, puncture, or surface indentation.
