At Kingfisher Direct, we know temporary access and ground protection mats are essential in many industries. Our extensive range of ground protection and temporary road mats lets you provide access for vehicles, machinery, and pedestrians while minimising the risk of property, heritage, and environmental damage.

Why choose our ground protection mats?

  • Heavy-duty Construction

Our ground mats and temporary road mats are made from rugged materials, ensuring both durability and the ability to support the weight of vehicles, machinery, and other equipment. These mats provide a heavy-duty solution for various applications, offering reliable support in different settings.

  • Versatile Solutions

Whether used as groundwork spoil boards, temporary roadways or pedestrian walkways, these mats are essential in the construction, civil engineering, and groundwork industries. They can also be used in the festivals and outdoor events sector.

  • Non-slip Safe Access

Many of our mats feature a non-slip surface, improving grip and reducing the risk of slipping, even in challenging weather or ground conditions. This feature not only enhances safety but improves the reliability of our ground mats in a range of environments.

  • Easy to Install

Although our access mats are heavy-duty, their lightweight design reduces transport costs and supports quick, easy installation. This combination of durability and portability enhances cost efficiency and easy setup, making these mats a practical choice for various applications.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do ground protection mats work?

Yes, ground protection mats do work. These track mats can provide access for vehicles, machinery, and pedestrians while protecting the ground beneath. Plus, ground mats are durable, offering reliable solutions for both short and long-term projects.

How long do ground protection mats last?

Ground protection matting is crafted from rugged materials, making it an extremely durable solution. In particular, our range of EuroTrak mats is a superior alternative to plywood because it will not warp, rot, crack, delaminate, or absorb harmful chemicals.

How ground protection mats work

Ground protection mats spread the heavy weight of vehicles, machinery, and pedestrian traffic over a much wider surface area. This evenly distributes weight and prevents severe ground compression, soil compaction, and surface rutting, allowing heavy equipment to move safely across soft, muddy, or delicate terrain like grass and sand without causing serious environmental or property damage.

Many of our ground guards also feature non-slip surface treads that improve traction and grip for tyres and foot traffic, even in harsh weather conditions.

How to install ground protection mats

Installing ground protection mats is straightforward, but proper preparation and fitting techniques will ensure maximum stability, safety, and ground preservation during use.

  1. Prepare the Site: Clear the installation area of large debris, rocks, or major obstructions. While ground mats are designed to conform to uneven terrain, removing sharp objects helps prevent unnecessary wear and provides a flatter surface for vehicles and machinery.

  2. Lay Out the Mats: Position the first mat at the start of the access route. Place subsequent mats side-by-side or end-to-end depending on whether you are creating a temporary roadway, a pedestrian walkway, or a large working platform. Leave a small expansion gap between panels to account for thermal expansion and weather conditions.

  3. Connect and Join the Panels: To prevent mats from slipping or separating under heavy vehicle loads, join them together using appropriate connectors or joining links, such as:

    • 2-Way Connectors / Flat Links: Ideal for creating straight tracks and temporary roadways for vehicles.

    • 4-Way Connectors: Best for securing multi-mat configurations, large staging areas, or hardstanding pads.

    • U-Pins or Staples: Useful for securing lightweight mats or meshes directly into soft earth or grass.

  1. Inspect and Secure: Ensure all connectors are fully tightened or locked in place before allowing foot or vehicle traffic onto the mats. Regularly check connections during extended project use to maintain safe access and continuous surface protection.
