MOT Type 1 is the industry-standard sub-base material used across the UK for forming strong, load-bearing foundations. Supplied in 850kg bulk bags, this premium aggregate is produced from crushed limestone, granite or other approved hard stone and is fully certified to the Specification for Highway Works.
This material is widely used by builders, landscapers and groundwork contractors for driveways, footpaths, patios, sheds, roadways, car parks and foundation preparation. Its well-graded mix of fines and solid angular stone ensures excellent compaction, making it an ideal base layer before laying tarmac, concrete, paving, blocks or gravel.
Type 1 is chosen for its strong structural stability and its ability to withstand repeated traffic, weather exposure and load-bearing pressures. When compacted with a vibrating plate or roller, it forms a dense, durable layer that delivers long-term performance on both domestic and commercial projects.
Delivery Information
This product is delivered kerbside via pallet network using a tail-lift vehicle. The driver can offload the bulk bag with a pallet truck but cannot move it across uneven, loose or inclined ground.
Please ensure suitable access and a flat, clear surface for offloading. Insufficient access may result in a failed delivery and re-delivery charges may apply.
If you require a crane-assisted delivery to position the bag over a wall, hedge or barrier, please contact our team for a tailored quotation.
Delivery to locations in central London may be subject to additional charges due to congestion / ULEZ. Please contact us prior to ordering for a quote.
FAQs
What is MOT Type 1?
MOT Type 1 is a graded aggregate made from crushed stone. It’s used as a sub-base for roads, driveways, paths and general construction. It compacts into a strong, stable layer.
What is MOT Type 1 used for?
It’s commonly used beneath tarmac, block paving, concrete, gravel and resin systems. Builders and landscapers use it for driveways, hardstandings, foundations and reinstatement works.
Is MOT Type 1 permeable?
No — Type 1 is mostly impermeable. It contains fines that compact tightly, preventing water from draining freely. For drainage layers, MOT Type 3 is the better choice.
How much MOT Type 1 do I need?
As a guide, an 850kg bulk bag covers 8–10 m² at 50mm depth. Deeper layers or high-traffic areas may require additional material.
How do you compact MOT Type 1?
A wacker plate (vibrating plate compactor) is the standard tool. Spread in 50mm layers, compacting each layer before adding the next for a solid, even finish.
Can I lay MOT Type 1 in the rain?
Yes but avoid heavy rainfall, as excess moisture can affect compaction quality. Slightly damp material usually compacts well.
Is MOT Type 1 good for drainage?
Not particularly. It is designed to compact densely. For permeable builds or SuDS-compliant applications, Type 3 is recommended.
