Pea gravel is a versatile, widely used aggregate in construction, groundworks and landscaping projects. Supplied in 850kg bulk bags, this clean, rounded gravel is ideal for drainage applications, pipe bedding, soakaways, backfilling and general utility works. Its smooth, naturally weathered stone reduces the risk of damaging pipes or cabling, making it a dependable choice for contractors and installers.
In addition to its functional role in drainage systems, pea gravel is also suitable for low-traffic landscaping areas, borders, garden features and pathways. Its small, evenly graded stones allow water to pass through freely, helping prevent pooling and aiding long-term drainage performance.
The material is easy to handle on site, simple to shovel, spread and level, and provides a stable, free-draining layer when compacted lightly. For landscaping contractors, sole traders and builders, pea gravel remains a reliable, multi-purpose aggregate that supports a broad range of domestic and commercial projects.

FAQs
What is pea gravel used for?
Pea gravel is commonly used for drainage systems, soakaways, pipe bedding, backfilling trenches, landscaping borders and low-traffic pathways.
Is pea gravel good for drainage?
Yes — the rounded stones allow water to flow freely, making it ideal for soakaways, French drains, and groundworks where effective drainage is required.
What size is pea gravel?
It typically ranges from 6–10mm, depending on the quarry source. The small, rounded shape makes it suitable for bedding around pipework.
Can pea gravel be used under paving?
It can be used as part of a drainage layer beneath paving, but it should not replace a structural sub-base. MOT Type 1 is still required for load-bearing foundations.
How much area does an 850kg bulk bag of pea gravel cover?
As a guide, an 850kg bulk bag covers 8–10m² at 50mm depth. Coverage varies slightly depending on stone size and compaction.
Can pea gravel be used for driveways?
It can be used decoratively on light-use areas, but it’s not ideal for regular vehicle traffic due to movement under tyres. Larger angular gravel is more stable.
