Whin Dust is a fine, crushed aggregate commonly used by landscapers and groundworkers to create a stable, level bedding layer beneath paving slabs, flags, kerbs and block paving. Supplied in 850kg bulk bags, this material is finely graded to fill voids left by coarser aggregates, helping to achieve a smooth and compacted finish ready for laying.
Used as an intermediate layer between MOT sub-base and the final paving course, whin dust supports accurate levels and reduces the risk of rocking, shifting or settlement over time. Its fine consistency makes it easy to screed, allowing installers to create a uniform bed ideal for patios, paths, driveways and garden landscaping projects.
Whin dust is also popular as part of artificial grass installations, forming a tightly compacted layer that reduces movement and provides a stable surface for the final turf. For contractors seeking a dependable material that improves accuracy and long-term performance, whin dust remains a go-to aggregate for detailed groundwork and paving preparation.
Delivery Information
This product is delivered kerbside via pallet network using a tail-lift vehicle. The driver can offload the bulk bag with a pallet truck but cannot move it across uneven, loose or inclined ground.
Please ensure suitable access and a flat, clear surface for offloading. Insufficient access may result in a failed delivery and re-delivery charges may apply.
If you require a crane-assisted delivery to position the bag over a wall, hedge or barrier, please contact our team for a tailored quotation.
Delivery to locations in central London may be subject to additional charges due to congestion / ULEZ. Please contact us prior to ordering for a quote.
FAQs
What is whin dust used for?
It’s primarily used as a fine bedding layer beneath paving slabs, flags, block paving and kerbs. It fills gaps between larger aggregates and helps create a smooth, stable base.
Is whin dust the same as quarry dust or grit stone dust?
It’s similar, whin dust is typically produced from whinstone (a very hard volcanic rock), offering excellent durability and compaction.
Can whin dust be used for artificial grass?
Yes. When compacted, it provides a firm, even base layer that limits movement and supports the final finish.
How thick should a layer of whin dust be?
A typical bedding layer is 25–50mm, depending on project requirements. It should sit on top of a compacted sub-base such as MOT Type 1.
Does whin dust compact well?
Extremely well. The fine particles bind together under a wacker plate, creating a dense and stable surface.
Can whin dust be used on its own as a sub-base?
No it is not structural. Use MOT Type 1 or similar beneath it to provide the required load-bearing strength.
